For non-noble metals, two types can be obtain with different structures:

  1. Core-Shell structure: where a metal core is capped by a layer of oxide
  2. Uniform structure: where the oxide of the material is the only component

We can engineer both monofunctional and multifunctional surfaces by precisely grafting organic molecules or peptides onto the nanoparticle cores.
